Cricket’s best quirks

It’s been a while since I have posted about our foster dogs, and it’s time for a Cricket update. She’s settled into our house really well, loves playing with other dogs, and has been learning a lot. Our happy girl is now nine months old and is close to 70 pounds. I know this because I lifted her on our bathroom scale this morning – that’s probably the last time I’ll be doing that! For a nine month-old puppy, she’s amazingly grown up.

She spends all day in her crate while we are at work without any complaints. (She’ll actually go to her crate if you ask her to.) She sleeps through the night. And she’s learning a lot about how to behave like a good dog – sitting, waiting while her food is put in her dish, walking without pulling on a leash, etc. Still, there’s puppy in her and she keeps us on her toes! She loves to play in the yard, especially with other dogs. She especially loves to chase snowballs. If I take her leash out, she goes bananas with excitement. She’s a wonderful pet, and we’re happy to foster her.

Still, she needs to go to her forever home where she can settle into a routine with her new family and they can start teaching her all about being a family pet. If you’re considering a new pet, please consider adopting a rescued dog. You can apply to adopt Cricket or any of ARF’s dogs online.

I thought I’d share some of Cricket’s best quirks. Like every dog, she’s got her own special traits. Here they are.

Groaning and Squeaking

When Cricket gets really tired, she groans a lot. She also squeaks. Here’s a short video of it – not one of her best groans, but it is an example!

Eating dinner

Eating

Cricket loves food. We’ve worked with her a lot on “be polite” which means she sits in front of her bowl and waits until you say “ok”. Only then will   she start eating. One of her cute quirks about eating is that she prefers to lie down with her bowl between her paws and eat.

Sleeping

Cricket is happy to sleep anywhere, and in any  position. Sometimes we wonder how she can actually be comfortable.

How is Cricket around cats and cat food? She is a gorgeous pup and I’m trying to see if maybe our house might be the right place for her before starting the application process.

Cricket seems to do really well around cats. We don’t have cats at home, but she’s spent time with cats at adopt-a-thons and is really comfortable around them. In fact, when we put her in the cat corner, she settled right down and went to sleep!

As for cat food, Cricket will eat anything that is out in the open, as will most dogs! The best thing to do is put the cat food somewhere that the cats can still get to, but where Cricket can’t. Lots of people put the cat food behind a baby gate, etc.

She’s a great dog. We love her a lot, and really want to see her find a great home that appreciates her as much as we do.

I know ARF updates the website on Fridays as to which animals will be at PetSmart on any given Saturday, but are you planning to bring Cricket to any in the near future?

Cricket is beautiful, I have been looking for a large breed shep mix.. I had one identical to her, I had rescued her over 9 years ago as an Adult around 2 or 3 through Heaven Can Wait/ Petsmart Chinook. Sadly she passed a couple years ago.. I have since started a family and have a 2 year old and a baby due in the next couple weeks.. How is Cricket with children. I also have 2 small breed dogs, a shihtzu mix and a Jack russell, both neutered males.. Let me know, as she has really won my heart..
    Thanks Carina

      Hi,

Cricket does really well with children and other dogs, especially at the offleash park and in our house once she’s gotten to know the dogs. It does look like she’ll be adopted this weekend by a great family. Please do keep checking the ARF website – there are so many fantastic dogs that need to find loving homes, just like Cricket.

Oh, well, I suppose it doesn’t matter anymore. Disappointed for me, but thrilled that Cricket may have found her forever home!
